Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.
Author Guidelines
In each edition, IKAT: The Indonesian Journal of Southeast Asian Studies will publish six articles based on research or literature survey.
Articles submitted for publication must conform to the following guidelines:
- The scope of the manuscript must concern Southeast Asian Studies;
- Types of the manuscript include: research articles (empirical/field and archive), theoretical articles, conceptual ideas, and theory application.
- The manuscript has not been published or accepted for publication, or are being considered for publication elsewhere. In addition to the manuscript, a written statement should be attached which clarifies that the manuscript is original and does not contain any elements of plagiarism.
- The manuscript is written in an academic English with standard academic writing structure and composition. The manuscript is typed 1.5 spaces in a quarto paper size (A4), between 6000-8000 words in length including references, pictures, and tables.
- The manuscript writing structure consists of:
- Title(max. 20 words)
- Name of the author
The name of the author is written without any academic degree, followed by the name of author’s institution and correspondence email, located under the title of the manuscript.
The abstract and keywords must be written in English. The length of the abstract is around 150-250 words, while the limit of the keywords is 3-5 words. The abstract, at least must contain the aim, research problems, methods, significances, and results.
The introduction is written without sub-section, which includes the general background, research question, and objectives of the study.
The literature review should contain a written overview of major writings and other sources of the selected topic. It should provide a description, summary, and evaluation of each source.
The research method should describe the context and setting of the study as well as elaborate the method utilized in addressing the issues including the method of analysis.
The research results and discussion should present the result of research, key findings with respect to the central research question in the introduction, state and discuss the main findings of the study, analyze the strength and limitations, and offer perspectives for future work.
The conclusion should contain a brief summary and suggestion. The summary should not contain repetition of research results and discussions, and it should instead contain a summation of research results and findings as expected in the research objective or hypothesis. The suggestions should present matters that will subsequently be conducted in relation to the research’s ensuing concepts.
Citations and references must follow the APA (American Psychological Association) 6th edition style. The reference list should appear at the end of the article and includes only literature actually cited in the manuscripts. References are ordered alphabetically and chronologically. We strongly recommend authors to use reference tools, such as Mendeley, Zotero, Endnote, etc. The manuscript must be submitted online to IKAT website.
- All submissions should be in MS. Word file format.
- Author(s) may use a template as a guide provided in IKAT website.
- All manuscripts will be reviewed anonymously according to reviewers’ expertise. The author will be given a chance to revise the manuscript based on reviewer or editor’s recommendation and advice. The decision of publication or rejection will be informed through author’s email address.

Articles published in IKAT are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license, which permits anyone to copy, transform, or redistribute articles for any lawful purpose in any medium, provided appropriate credit is given to the original author(s) and IKAT is recognized as its original publisher. A link to this license should also be provided. Any derivative work of an article published in IKAT must also be shared under the same (or compatible) license.
Both copyright and publishing rights on articles are retained by the respective author(s), without restrictions. Only a non-exclusive license is granted to IKAT. to publish the article and identify itself as its original publisher.
Any submission to IKAT will be taken to mean all authors associated with the manuscript agree to these conditions.
