Author Guidelines
Humaniora welcomes the following types of submissions:
- Research articles (6.000 to 8.000 words): These articles should make a substantial contribution to the study of the humanities from an Indonesian perspective. They are typically based on empirical, library, or media data and utilize specific theoretical framework for analysis. Authors are also welcome to submit conceptual papers that engage with contemporary theoretical discussions in the fields of humanities covered by Humaniora. Additionally, methodological reflections in the humanities are encouraged. Research articles form the core of Humaniora’s publication. Template of Research Articles can be downloaded here.
- Book reviews (1.000 to 2.000 words): These reviews should discuss book(s) published within the last 5 years. For specific guideline, please refer to the Book Review Guidelines (ugm.ac.id)
- Empirical reports (3.000 to 4.000 words): This section is dedicated for scholars, particularly students and junior researchers, to report on recent field research. It encourages creative engagement and reflection on empirical data without requiring extensive theoretical analysis. Introduced in 2024. Humaniora publishes only one empirical report per issue.
In addition, beginning in 2024, Humaniora publishes at most one Thematic Edition per year, providing a platform for rich scholarly discussions on contemporary issue in Indonesia.
- Thematic Editions: A Thematic Edition is a curated collection consisting of at least five Research Articles and one Introduction (editorial), and other types of publication (Book Reviews and/or Empirical reports). Submissions for Thematic Edition should be made through a proposal outlining the theme and proposed timeline, submitted by the Guest Editor. Proposal for Thematic Edition should explain why Humaniora is the appropriate venue for this edition. For more details, please visit: Poster - Call for Proposal Humaniora.png - Google Drive
All manuscripts, regardless of type, submitted should be prepared in accordance with the following guidelines:
- Articles must not have been published, accepted for publication, or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Along with the manuscript, a written statement should be attached, confirming that the article is original and free from any elements of plagiarism.
- Types of articles suitable for publication include the following: research reports (laboratory, field, archives), conceptual ideas, studies, theory applications.
- Articles are written in English using academic language and adhere to a standard academic writing structure. Manuscripts must be typed in 1,5 line spacing on A4 paper size and should follow the specified length guidelines for the submission type, including references, pictures, and tables. Papers that significantly exceed or fall short of the required word count will be returned before peer review.
- Articles should be in form of essay which includes:
- Title (max. 15 words).
- Abstract (150-200 words): The abstract should include a brief introduction, methods, findings, discussion, and research implications for both empirical and conceptual aspects. It should also include five to seven keywords.
- Introduction (2-3 pages, without subsections): This section should include the background, objectives, and literature review/theoretical framework (if applicable) of the research. The introduction should conclude with a clear statement of the items to be discussed.
- Methods (1 page): This section should describe the research approach and methodology used in the study.
- Findings and Discussion: This section should consist of the results and analysis of the study, presented in the form of subchapters.
- Conclusion: This section should provide a brief summary of the findings and discussion. It is strongly recommended to avoid simply repeating statements from previous sections.
- References.
- Please do not write author’s name anywhere in the article. Humaniora uses a double-blind review process, so authors name and details should be provided in the metadata within the Open Journal System submission.
- Diacritics and Spelling of Proper Names
In order to be reproduced accurately in printed version, articles must be aware of any special (e.g., phonetic) symbols. They must be explained in detail with a typeset sample as well. To deal with this issue, Humaniora recommends authors to use Times New Roman font, but if this font does not support some symbols, authors are allowed to use other alternatives with notification to the Humaniora board.
Authors must be aware of the spelling of proper names, especially in terms of Indonesian personal names, newspapers, offices, and organizations. They have to be written as their original spelling although they might be now outdated, for example: Sukarno, Soeharto, Poerbatjaraka, Ki Hadjar Dewantara, Zoetmulder, and Margono Djojohadikusumo. Meanwhile, any geographical names should be written in their modern spellings.
- Dates and Numbers
Dates in the text: 17 August 1945; dates in footnotes and the bibliography: 17-8-1945. Numbers from one to ten should be spelled out; higher numbers, percentages and measurements should be given as numerals (3 km, 6%).
- Figures, Tables and Maps
If your manuscript contains figures or tables, upload them as separate documents, number the figures and tables consecutively, and refer to them in the text (Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, Table 2, etc.). Do not include the figures and tables themselves in the manuscript. Indicate in the manuscript where about you would like to see the figure or table included if the manuscript is accepted for publication.
Maps can be called a figure (and numbered as such).
For all images (line drawings, photographs, maps), please use high resolution source files: min. 150 dpi for photographs, min 300 dpi for linework images. This is the minimum resolution required at the dimensions of which the images should eventually be reproduced. Please bear in mind that the images themselves should also be of high quality (e.g. the images should be clear and sharp and any text in the images should be sharp and legible). Give the caption and the source of the figure in the main text (exactly at the point where you indicate: ‘Figure x about here’).
- Reference list format is based on APA (American Psychological Association) style 7th edition. The reference list should appear at the end of the article and includes only literature actually cited in the manuscripts. References are ordered alphabetically and chronologically. We strongly recommend authors to use reference tools, such as Mendeley, Zotero, Endnote, etc. Herewith are some of the APA-based references format structure:
